How to shut down Windows 8
Yay! It’s finally happened! I have snagged my own copy of the Windows 8 Developer Preview and am testing it as I speak. I will be posting tips and hints as I figure them out, so don’t touch that dial!
One of the tricky things about Windows 8 is the removal of the traditional Start menu. Its various functions have been replaced by Charms, Search, and the Start page, which is going to take a major learning curve.
It took me some time to figure out how to shut down Windows 8 at first. It turns out, it isn’t overly hard. All you have to do is put your mouse at the bottom-left corner of the screen until the “Charms” menu appears. Click on Settings, and a bar will appear on the right side of the screen. Select Power, then Shut Down.
That’s it! Stay tuned for more Windows 8 tips from Haiteq!

Really help me out, Finally I can shut it down!!
Haha, you’re welcome!
Thanks, Had the same issue!
Another way is to use win+i will bring up the menu too!
Very true. Good tip!
DuH! Good find cant wait to get my hands on this!
Any way to turn Windows 8 off *without* a mouse? And any way to bring up the Text Input Panel?
Do you have a touchscreen? Or are you just wanting to use it with a keyboard? Pressing Win+I will bring up that settings panel; and you should be able to tab through it to get to the proper menu item. I also am pretty sure that Alt+F4 on a blank desktop or start menu should give you the shutdown menu. I’m not positive; I’m not on Windows 8 right now. However, give it a try.
Hold down the Windows + C key / settings / power / shut down
If you have a keyboard, hold down the Windows + C key / Settings / Power / Shut down
This does not work if you are using the touch screen. If you do not have a mouse, and attempt to “hover” using your finger, it does not work.
I don’t have a touch screen, but I’ve read that swiping from the right side of the screen will bring up the start menu in the form of a sidebar. I don’t know if it’s just one finger or more, but you are supposed to swipe.
The shut down button hidden under the settings button which is hidden on the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Too many clicks, it does not power off the computer and from what I am reading it does not work with a touchscreen. I do realize this is just a preview, but I hope Microsoft addresses this and other issues before it releases the live version. Looking good so far, though.
I am of the same opinion as you are. I think that the Windows 8 team would do better to put a search bar and shutdown/logout menu in the top-right corner of the screen for every app. That would come in especially handy on touch-screen PCs.
If it’s that hard to shut off, you can imagine how unintuitive most of it is. What a steaming pile. Not impressed whatsoever.
TROLL. YOU MAC FANBOIS WILL NEVER LET MICROSOFT HAVE A BRAKE WILL YOU. WHY CANT YOU JUST ADMIT THAT MAYBE MICROSOFT IS ACTUALLY CAPABLE OF PRODUCING SOMETHING THAT IS GOOD AND INNOVATIVE.
He’s not trolling but rather actually has a point. Long time windows users are going to have a tough time with this new UI. There really is very little intuitive about it.
Windows 8 is NOT intutive and I am NOT a fanboy. It just plain sucks!
This IS interesting. A *charms* menu??
I don’t have that at all on my desktop(not the green wallpaper background), the green wallpaper only displays a bid START in the upper left & my name & a pic at the upper right (there is a *log off* feature but no shutdown).
If I move the mouse cursor over to the lower left corner of the taskbar an hover over the microsoft icon (*start* menu icon) a small *start* tab pops up, but it disappears immediately if I move the cursor, I am puzzled as how to shut off the op/sys, the shutdown feature has been removed from Task manager as well so you can’t shut down from there.
Shutting down process taking too much time..
Awesome,
Till now I had to holddown the power button to shutdown the computer…lol…Finally you are a saviour.
just type “shutdown /s” (without the quotes) while in the startmenu and press enter
I just ended up doing the old ALT-F4 as per all previous windows versions but thought it stupidly user hostile. It was bad enough before when your had to click on “START” to STOP the machine. Then sometimes you might get “You have performed an illegal operation” and you are left wondering if the Police are coming!
You can also use the ctrl+alt+del method. That will bring up a screen which will also allow you to “tab” to the shutdown if you’re not using a mouse.
hey this take 2 much time 2 shutdown
Shutdown? Just press the power button on the computer. Mines shuts down just fine. What a novel idea, the power button shuts it down.
Haha thanks, my power button is broken on my laptop (powers on with remote) and i have been using “shutdown /s /t 00″ with the cmd lol this is much cleaner.
If you want to make your life a little simpler you can set up PowerShell shortcut scripts on your desktop. Use commands like restart-computer or stop-computer.
If you consider yourself a power user (which you should be if you are playing with the beta) then you should know, or get to know PowerShell.
You can of course always use the PowerShell commands at the prompt to. If you can type even moderately fast you can do it faster than navigating through Microsoft’s miasma of menus.
C’mon guys, this is exactly why the preview was released! To get feedback from us consumers. Not everyone is open and readily accepting of change. Like Ridzek said, if you can flick the power button to turn it on, i’m sure its not that hard to tap it once more to initiate a shutdown.
