Make another switch that is 1mm or 2mm longer and try again.I repaired both of my Canon 20D flash hot shoe's with the above techniques and have had no problems since. There is a micro switch under a guide blade in the shoe on the right side. That is good to hear. Will the flash pop up when you have the camera mode dial set to the "Full Auto" mode (green square)?

I had to turn a lock knob so tight to have a good contact on hot shoe. When I manually opened the flash, I saw in the trigger button area has accumulated dust in it. Problem with my new 7D's pop-up flash! Source I have to find the troble shooting web.
